Austrian Chancellor Suggests Re-Run Of French And Dutch Referenda

Speaking to the German media this week, Austria's Chancellor, Wolfgang Schussel suggested that the proposed EU constitution should be put before the French and Dutch population again in two years' time.

Arguing that changes must be made to assuage the fears of the countries' voters, he explained to the Frankenfurter Allgemeine Zeitung that:

"People fear an over-expansion of the EU through the accession of Turkey, Ukraine and further countries. If a more cautious line is adopted here, then we could appear before the French or Dutch public once again and say 'look here, we have understood and drawn the consequences'."

He went on to add:

"Then, perhaps in 2007, if in one or other country there has been political change, then a second attempt can be made."

Austria will assume the presidency of the European Union at the start of 2006.
