The Central Bank of Malta, as the Competent Authority, issued a banking licence to Sparkasse Bank Malta plc.
The bank, which is a wholly owned subsidiary of Sparkasse Schwaz, an Austrian savings bank, is authorised to operate with non-residents of Malta in all currencies except the Maltese Lira. Sparkasse Schwaz will be the third Austrian bank to establish a subsidiary in Malta licensed in terms of the Banking Act and the fifth overall, taking into account the Austrian banks having subsidiaries licensed in terms of the Malta Financial Services Centre Act 1988.
Sparkasse Schwaz, with a total balance sheet value of Euro 767.4 million as at the end of financial year 1999, was founded in 1872 and is the largest savings bank in the province of Schwaz in Austria
