Tax office workers throughout Australia will carry out half-day strikes next week in protest against the Taxation Office's decision to axe 2,310 jobs. Tax Commissioner, Michael Carmody, announced news of the job cuts last month and just one day after his announcement a thousand temporary employees were sacked with details of the remainder of the job cuts to be released in October.
The Community and Public Sector Union (CPSU) national tax office secretary Shane O'Connell has told reporters that workers across the country this week are attending meetings to discuss the strike action. 'We think there needs to be a commitment to no compulsory redundancies ... it's crazy that you are effectively throwing out experienced tax office workers onto the street,' he said.
Probably one of the few occasions when strikers will have the whole-hearted support of the other 99% of the population.
