It has been reported in Australia that the Taxation Office is mulling over a proposal that would provide up to 5.5 million taxpayers with refunds even if they haven't filed a tax return. According to the Daily Telegraph, the plan would see taxpayers sent an income statement and once a few details are confirmed via a telephone conversation they could receive a refund.
The Daily Telegraph obtained the information from a Freedom of Information document which stated: 'The language of tax makes the system complex and impenetrable for ordinary PAYE taxpayers.' And as part of the federal government's simplification initiative, the ATO is also considering further changes arising from a report from The Research Forum which was commissioned by the ATO.
The report concluded that the reform to income tax that most taxpayers would like to see is the introduction of an income statement, with 75 per cent of taxpayers expected to go with the simpler option.
