Australian Tax Office To Undergo Independent Review

A comprehensive review of the internal decision-making processes of the Australian Tax Office (ATO) is being launched later this month in an attempt to throw light on the causes of growing delays in the consideration of complex tax matters.

The main thrust of the investigation, according to reports, will be on the regulation of trust structures for professional services firms.

The six-month review is to commence within the next two weeks, and will be carried out by the inspector-general of taxation David Vos.

"We will be looking towards finding solutions, looking at what causes these delays," explained Mr Vos.

The latest review follows the release of a report last month which looked at the length of time taken to complete ATO compliance activities directed at businesses. The objective of this review was to determine whether the ATO strikes an appropriate balance between minimising the adverse impact on business and the risk to the Revenue.

Among his recommendations, Mr Vos urged the ATO to quickly resolve those audits experiencing significant delays.
