In an interview set to be published today, Australian Prime Minister, John Howard again raised the possibility of tax cuts if the budget allows it, but admitted that the idea was a 'conceptual priority' rather than a promise.
Speaking to Bulletin Magazine, Mr Howard revealed: 'I'm not saying we can, I'm not promising. I'm simply saying all things being equal, I want the capacity left to do that. If you have a bit of room, why should you make it available for extra (government) spending?'
Despite Treasurer, Peter Costello's revelation last November that the 2002-03 budget was likely to achieve an underlying surplus of A$2.1 billion, the Prime Minister this week warned government ministers with big spending plans in mind to shelve them in the short-term, stressing that in the current uncertain climate: 'We obviously have to spend more money on defense and security'.
