According to reports from Armenian news agency, Arminfo, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has told the Armenian government that it must complete the aims of its tax collection plan to amass 53 billion drams (US$93.9 million) in the fourth quarter of 2001.
Armenian Deputy Finance and Economy Minister, Pavel Safaryan, has confirmed this week that if the government fails to meet the IMF's demand, it may not be allocated the second instalment of funds from the World Bank which is worth US$15 million in total to Armenia.
The task is likely to place a great strain on the government. This is particularly in view of October's collection rate when tax collectors obtained 15.3 billion drams ($27 million dollars) in taxes leading many to believe this to be a strong indicator that the government will struggle to fulfill the plan.
