Argentinean farmers are striking for a week from August 28 in protest of President Cristina Fernandez’s decision to veto a bill that would have granted favourable tax treatment to farmers, heavily affected by last season’s drought.
The bill, that gained parliamentary approval a week previous, would have provided for funds of ARS500m (USD130m) to areas that suffered arid conditions. The bill also would have granted farmers tax benefits and in areas deemed ‘disaster zones’ full exemptions from export taxes. Areas deemed less affected would have seen export taxes halved.
The controversial 35% tax on soya exports, Argentina's 'green gold', the topic of recent debate between farming groups and the government, also remains intact.
