The Argentine government is set to unveil a package of anti-tax evasion measures within the next fortnight, Economy Minister Roberto Lavagna revealed to lawmakers last Thursday.
According to Deputy Alberto Coto, one of a number of legislators informed of the impending move, the package will contain twenty new measures, many of which are to be enacted by decree or official resolution. However, Congress will first have to give its consent to two new laws before the full package can be enacted.
Although the government has revealed scant details of the new proposals, it is thought that a tightening of customs laws and tougher penalties for tax evasion will figure prominently among the measures.
The administration’s crackdown on tax evasion has been at the forefront of its agenda since President Nestor Kirchner was elected last May. The government also promised to enact a package of anti-evasion laws as part of an IMF accord last year.
