According to reports in the UK media, the dispute between Apple Computer and Apple Corp over the computer firm's use of the record company's trademark in conjunction with the iTunes music download service could be nearing an end.

Reporting on Tuesday, the Telegraph revealed that an out-of-court settlement appears to be in the offing.

Speaking to the newspaper, an unnamed legal source revealed that:

"People are expecting this to be the biggest settlement anywhere in legal history, outside of a class action suit. The numbers could be mindboggling."

Apple Computer has so far faced and lost two legal challenges by the music firm, the first of which took place in 1989-90 and resulted in an out of court settlement (in favour of Apple Corp), and an agreement that in exchange for being permitted to use the name, Apple Computer would not put its name to products for use in the recording or reproduction of music.

The second legal wrangle came years later, when Apple Computer developed PCs which allowed music to be played via attachable speakers.
