Apple Computer on Thursday announced that it has launched an investigation into whether RealNetworks' Harmony digital music translation software represents a violation of the US Digital Millenium Copyright Act.
The software, which is currently only available as a test version, circumvents restrictions placed in Apple's iPods to allow RealNetworks customers to download music to the portable devices from sources other than Apple's iTunes store. The Harmony service is reportedly also usable with Microsoft-compatible portable music devices.
Commenting on the move last week, Apple slammed RealNetworks for using "the tactics and ethics of a hacker" to unlock the proprietary technology contained in the iPod devices, and threatened to block access for iPods to the Harmony service next time it issues a software update.
