According to reports from the local media, Antigua's Prime Minister, Lester Bird, has refused the proposals of the President of Antigua Trades and Labour Union (AT&LU), Wigley George, to re-introduce income tax.
Mr Bird's party, the Antigua Labour Party,
abolished income tax 26 years ago - a pledge which helped the party win
the election campaign.
According to the Antigua Sun, Mr Bird sent a communication while out of the country attending a CARICOM meeting last week, confirming his stance that the salaries of 'non-established' public service employees should not be reduced.
'I am instructing the Ministry of Finance not to proceed with the reduction of the income of non-established workers. When I return to Antigua, I will revisit this matter personally with the union,' the PM said from the Bahamas.
