Antigua and Barbuda's prime minister and American officials signed an agreement Monday extending the lease of the US Air Force base in the Caribbean country until 2008.
Under the deal, the US government will continue to pay annual rent of US$1.25 million to Antigua & Barbuda for the Antigua Air Station, which helps track spacecraft launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida.
The new agreement, which also increases US contributions to the maintenance and operating costs of Antigua's V.C. Bird International Airport from $40,000 to $93,900 annually, takes effect in January and continues an arrangement between the US military and the Antiguan government that began in the early 1960s.
