The number of UN peace-keepers patrolling the ceasefire line between northern and southern Cyprus will be reduced by one third if recommendations by UN Secretary General Kofi Annan are accepted.
Under Annan’s proposals, the 1,230-strong UN presence along the ceasefire line would be reduced to 860, with the numbers of civilian police remaining at 69, reflecting the “increasingly benign” security situation in Cyprus.
However, Annan is of the view that a UN military presence still needs to be maintained in the island to ensure the ceasefire is maintained and, according to a leaked UN draft report, to “foster conditions conducive to a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus problem."
The Secretary General’s recommendations are the result of a review of the UN mission in Cyprus following the decisive rejection of the UN-brokered settlement plan by Greek Cypriots in April 2004.
