UK Foreign Minister Jack Straw (pictured) and his Spanish counterpart Miguel Angel Moratinos met in Madrid last week, where it was agreed that progress should be made towards giving Gibraltar an independent voice in future sovereignty negotiations.
As a result of the discussion, Straw and Moratinos agreed to discuss the setting up of a new forum for dialogue which will have an open agenda and within which Gibraltar could have its voice heard under a "two countries, three voices," format.
Moriantos explained that the new approach by the Spanish government was meant to “gain the confidence of Gibraltarian citizens”, adding that recovering the territory alone “would not be sufficient if we didn't win the friendship.”
Welcoming the move, Gibraltar’s Chief Minster Peter Caruana stated: "We look forward to the opportunity to engage in this process of cooperation and to participate in open-agenda, properly structured dialogue."
