Ana Palacio Says Gibraltar Not Top Priority For Forthcoming Meeting

Speaking in the United States this week, Spanish Foreign Minister, Ana Palacio has revealed that forthcoming talks with her UK counterpart, Jack Straw will not centre on the Anglo-Spanish dispute over the sovereignty of Gibraltar.

Ms Palacio told reporters that other issues, such as the EU general affairs meeting scheduled for the end of this month, enlargement of the Union, and the situation in Iraq will top the agenda, although she refused to rule out the possibility that the Rock may be discussed.

Although the Spanish Foreign Minister stressed that she will not agree to a full and formal meeting of the Brussels process until she feels confident that she has gained a full understanding of the Gibraltar situation, she once again confirmed Spain's unwillingness to compromise on eventual full sovereignty over the disputed territory.

This announcement was received gleefully by some sections of the Gibraltarian media. Iberia News, for example suggested yesterday that Ms Palacio 'has sent out the strongest warning yet that Spain is willing to give up on the present Anglo/Spanish negotiations'.
