Online retail portal, Amazon.com has filed its own lawsuit against Cendant Publishing, it has emerged.
Late last month, Cendant brought legal action against Amazon over its automated recommendations service.
Based on previous purchases, Amazon's website recommends other products that may be of interest to its customers. However, Cendant argues that this infringes on its patent, granted in August 2004, which covers: “A computer-implemented method and system utilising a distributed network for the recommendation of goods and/or services to potential costumers based on a potential customer's selection of goods and/or services and a database of previous customer purchasing history”.
In its countersuit, also filed last month, Amazon accused Cendant of infringing on four Amazon patents, covering areas such as credit card transmission methods and systems, and referral technology.
The retailer has reportedly stated that it has "suffered and will continue to suffer irreparable injury and damages, in an amount not yet determined", and is seeking unspecified damages, in addition to an injunction against Cendant to prevent further infringement.
