It emerged this week that online retail portal, Amazon has been granted a patent in the United States covering technology which monitors browsing patterns in order to make suggestions on other products which might be of interest.
The patent, number 6,912,505, or "Use of product viewing histories of users to identify related products" pertains to Amazon's 'People who bought this also bought' function.
The granting of the license by the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) is likely to have a far-reaching effect on the e-commerce industry. However, Amazon has not yet revealed whether it intends to seek royalty payments from merchants employing the technology in question.
