Online retailer Amazon.com is facing a lawsuit brought against it by Cendant Publishing over its automated recommendations service.
Based on previous purchases, Amazon's website recommends other products that may be of interest to its customers. However, Cendant argues that this infringes on its patent, granted in August, which covers:
“A computer-implemented method and system utilising a distributed network for the recommendation of goods and/or services to potential costumers based on a potential customer's selection of goods and/or services and a database of previous customer purchasing history”.
The publishing firm, which is a subsidiary of the travel and real estate giant of the same name, is reported to be seeking damages and an injunction to prevent further infringement of its patent.
