IP and technology commercialisation company, BTG announced on Wednesday that it is suing online retailers Amazon.com, BarnesandNoble.com and Overstock.com, and online DVD rental service, Netflix for infringing technology owned by the firm which allows websites to track the navigation of the internet by potential and actual customers.

In a statement released yesterday, BTG announced that:

"The 5,717,860 and 5,712,979 patents were granted by the US Patent and Trademark Office in 1998, and were acquired by BTG in 2002. The technology was developed by Infonautics Corp., a pioneering provider of personalised web-based information agents and Internet sites. Infonautics, founded in 1992, created one of the first comprehensive, subscription-based online information resources on the Internet. The technology enables the efficient tracking of the movement of Internet users between websites and is used in certain online marketing programmes."

Ian Harvey, BTG's Chief Executive Officer, commented: "We believe the patents are fundamental to the tracking of users for the online marketing programmes used by Amazon.com, BarnesandNoble.com, Netflix and Overstock.com, and that the commercial potential of the patents is significant.”

BTG is seeking unspecified damages and an injunction preventing future unlicensed use of the technology by the companies in question.
