Speaking at a recent conference entitled 'Security, Trust and Convenience: E-Confidence and the Consumer', Amazon.com's Director of European Public Policy, Susan Pointer warned that a fragmented legal regime and excessive regulation may be undermining the confidence of online consumers across the European Union.
According to a report from the europemedia.net news service last week, the Amazon executive argued that: 'Even though EU directives on e-commerce are in place, thus applying the same regulations across the EU, an uneven implementation of them may re-fragment markets.'
Therefore, according to Mrs Pointer, what the industry needs is to have a clear, predictable, and updated legal framework in which companies can conduct business online. She stressed that regulations must also be adapted to the technical realities of the technologies utilised by websites.
