E-commerce giant, Amazon announced last week that it has reached a settlement with Soverain Software ahead of a potentially protracted legal battle over its use of the smaller firm's patents.
Soverain filed claims against Amazon and clothes manufacturer, Gap in January 2004, alleging that the two firms had infringed on patents covering the recognition of customers who make multiple visits to an e-commerce site, the concept of the interactive 'shopping cart', and the authentication and automatic processing of transactions.
Gap reached an agreement with Soverain in February of this year.
Under the $40 million deal reached by Amazon and Soverain just days before the trial was set to begin, both parties will dismiss all claims and counter-claims against each other, and Amazon will receive a non-exclusive licence to use the patents in question.
