Alexander Scott Replaces Jennifer Smith As Bermudian Premier

After a rather turbulent couple of days in the political life of Bermuda, the jurisdiction now finds itself with a new leader, Alexander Scott, following the somewhat emotional departure of former Premier Jennifer Smith this week.

"For the sake of the Party, for the sake of the Government, and for the sake of Bermuda, I sincerely hope that in the future, we will judge our leaders by the substance of their accomplishments, and not by the perception of their personal style," Ms Smith announced in her last media briefing as the island's leader, referring to criticism of her style of leadership.

Ms Smith's fall was probably hastened by the slim margin of victory at the recent general election, which saw the Progressive Labour Party returned to government for a second term, but only just, with 51.65% of the vote. Smith herself only managed to retain her seat by a mere eight votes. Subsequently, five cabinet members withdrew their support from Ms Smith, along with much of the parliamentary party, forcing the Premier to fall on her own sword.

"The irony of last night's event is not wasted on me," observed Smith in her parting shot. "It was the stated aim of the Opposition to put an end to the Smith Government and so it has now come to pass. It is more unfortunate that friendly fire has taken out the Smith Government."

The former leader turned down an offer from her replacement for a place in his cabinet saying that it would "compromise both the strength of his leadership and my principles." However, she is expected to continue to represent her constituency.

Mr Scott, a former public relations manager and cabinet minister was sworn into his new role as Premier yesterday.
