The Albanian authorities on Saturday marked a key step in their quest for EU membership by signing a Stabilization and Association Agreement with the European Commission.

The Agreement, put in place by the EU in order to boost stability in the volatile Balkan region, requires the adoption of EU standards in several single market areas, the removal of trade barriers, and increased levels of cooperation within the region.

Croatia and Macedonia have already implemented the agreement, receiving official EU candidate status in return.

The signing ceremony was attended by Enlargement Commissioner, Olli Rehn and Albania's Foreign Minister, Besnik Mustafaj, in addition to EC chief, Jose Manuel Barroso and Albanian Prime Minister, Sali Berisha.

According to an EU Observer report, speaking with regard to the newly concluded agreement, Mr Barroso cautioned that:

"This is no time to relax your efforts. The real work begins now that the agreement has been installed. Albania has to establish a track-record in implementing this agreement, in order to move closer to the EU."
