Irish Premier Bertie Ahern gave a keynote speech on the economy last week in which he said that it was time to get 'back to basics' with economic policies, and argued that further reforms were needed to improve Ireland's international competitiveness.
In particular, Mr Ahern wanted to send a clear signal to the 'learned professionals, middlemen and monopolists' who had taken advantage of Ireland's growing economy without making a contribution to it commensurate with their gains, according to a report from the RTE online news service. It is time to get tough with these profiteers, he announced.
The Prime Minister also reportedly made reference to possible land reforms which would bring down the cost of property in Ireland. He revealed that he has asked the All Party Committee on the Constitution to look into the costs of building land. Ahern said the government would not baulk at the potentially tough decisions ahead.
