Ireland's Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern has strongly defended Finance Minister, Charlie McCreevy against the motion of no confidence tabled against him by Fine Gael.
The Opposition party tabled the motion last week, accusing Mr McCreevy of mismanaging the country's economy, and of having misled the voting public as to the seriousness of the Republic's economic situation in the run-up to this year's General Election.
However, speaking prior to the two day debate on the motion which began on Tuesday, Mr Ahern stressed his confidence in Mr McCreevy's abilities, arguing that having brought into being a fairer tax system during the jurisdiction's boom period, he should now be allowed to steer the country through economically more difficult times.
Speaking to RTE News on Monday, the Prime Minister also announced his support for the Finance Minister's controversial pet project, the Special Incentive Savings Scheme, revealing that although no final decision on the matter has been taken ahead of December's budget, he personally would like to see the savings schemes remain.
