Age Concern executive director, Claudette Fleming has called for the introduction of income tax in Bermuda to cover the costs incurred as a result of the jurisdiction's rapidly increasingly elderly population.
According to a report in the Bermuda Royal Gazette, census figures from 2000 showed that the size of Bermuda's elderly population had risen by 25% over the previous 10 years, accounting for some 11% of the population. Ms Fleming warned that this is likely to increase to around 13% over the next ten years.
'We need a tax structure to support our growing social services. We need some type of solid revenue,' she announced, continuing: 'There should be some type of progressive tax system with minimum focus on the working class and the maximum focus on the disposable income for those who can afford to give more.'
