Australia's Joondalup City Council has approved a plan to transform the Ocean Reef boat harbour into an AUD800m (USD592m) marina, it has been announced.
Plans for the reconstruction of the boat harbour have been in the pipeline for several years now, although the final decision to go ahead with the transformation was made on May 5, 2009. Details of the venture will now be put to the public for comment.
Once built, the council has explained that the Ocean Reef Marina will boast a mixture of first-class residential, commercial and recreational facilities. Around 850 boat pens have been earmarked in the plans, with further details for the construction of an artificial reef, two internal beaches, a Bondi-style ocean pool and a water playground also unveiled.
The council has revealed that the project will remain under public ownership, in order to generate income.
