The Australian Taxation Office is proposing to expand its online facilities to encompass an educational programme aimed at small firms and start-ups unfamiliar with requirements and processes involved with GST, ABN registrations and business activity statements.
The programme, to be known as the online version of BizStart, will be designed around the existing lectures given by the taxation office throughout the country which are attended by up to 10,000 people every year. The online BizStart modules are intended to help accommodate those who are unable to attend the lectures, said assistant deputy commissioner for small business, Angela Black in an Australian IT News report.
However, Ms Black pointed out that the lectures would in all probability continue to be the more popular forum for taxpayer information as users are able to interact with and ask questions of the lecturers.
Nevertheless, Black said taxpayers were becoming increasingly interested in the online medium and the web-based BizStart will also be used as a platform to provide information on compliance issues. The ATO is aiming to have the online BizStart programme up and running for the commencement of the 2004/2005 financial year.
