The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) is reminding taxpayers who haven’t lodged a tax return for the 2006–07 financial year and are planning to file online, that they only have until 29th February 2008.
Tax Commissioner Michael D’Ascenzo explained that while the deadline for individuals lodging their own tax return was 31st October 2007, e-tax was still available to lodge late returns.
“Penalties apply for late lodgment,” Mr D’Ascenzo stated. “However, if you lodge your return voluntarily and receive a refund the Tax Office will remit the penalties so you don’t have to pay them."
He continued: “This year e-tax users have had access to even more options for pre-filling information including bank interest, share dividends and information from other government agencies such as Medicare and Centrelink. We are planning to do more next year.”
Over 1.9 million people have lodged their 2007 tax returns using e-tax, an increase of over 300,000 people from the same time last year.
Individuals who miss the deadline are advised to contact the Tax Office to discuss options for lodging their tax return.
