A survey carried out in May of this year on behalf of the Tenon Forum has found that some 53% of the UK's SMEs expect corporate tax levels to rise over the current governmental term.

The Tenon Forum is an independent think tank made up of leading entrepreneurs from the UK’s small and medium-sized business community. The Tenon Forum Think Tank meets to analyse issues arising from a regular survey.

According to the results of the most recent survey, SMEs in the transport and communications sector are the most pessimistic with regard to their tax prospects in the near future, with 60% predicting an increase in corporate taxes.

Speaking last week, chairman of the Forum, Richard Kennet observed that:

"An increase in corporation tax will undoubtedly have an impact on margins, which could have quite severe repercussions for smaller firms. This research reflects the widespread belief that businesses will have to contribute more to meet public spending commitments."
