A South African Revenue Service spokesman revealed this week that 3.14 million tax returns remain outstanding from previous financial years some of which date back to the 1980's.
This figure comprises some 1.14 million firms, 1.796 million individual tax payers and over 203,000 trusts, Revenue Service spokesman Jacob Dlamini revealed to Business Report. Within these numbers, nearly 275,000 originate from the 1980s Dlamini said.
These somewhat shocking statistics have spurred the Revenue Service to launch an educational campaign aimed at engendering a more responsible attitude towards filing tax returns.
"The campaign is intended to remind taxpayers of their responsibilities and to give new taxpayers advice on how to complete their returns. To make the filing process smooth, SARS has simplified the steps to be followed by individual taxpayers by issuing a new and more user-friendly form called the IT 12S," explained the spokesman.
The Revenue Service is planning to issue 3.8 million tax returns by the end of next month according to Dlamini. This will represent numerical growth of 6.8% in the county's tax base since the last financial year.
