Manx Telecom is set to provide a new Third Generation service for mobile phone and laptop users which promises to be six times faster than current mobile download speeds.
Manx Telecom, which has teamed up with its parent company, the UK-based telecoms provider O2, and technology partner Lucent, will be delivering its new 3.5G service later in the year. The new service will be capable of running advanced applications requiring high bandwidth, such as video streaming and conferencing, with download speeds of 1.3 megabytes per second.
At present, those on the move have to make do with the much slower GPRS download service, which runs only at around 115 kilobytes per second, ruling out the use of these bandwidth-hungry applications.
Tom Meageen, development manager at Manx Telecom, stated, according to the Isle of Man Online, that:
"Business people requiring access to their corporate systems while mobile, will get really effective video conferencing, but also access to PowerPoint presentations and Excel spreadsheets at an enhanced speed."
However, he added that due to the lack of availability of mobile handsets with 3G technology enabled, the new system will initially only be available on laptops.
