According to a study by internet audience measurement company Nielsen/NetRatings, more than 22 million taxpayers used an online tax filing site in February as the tax filing deadline approached.
This represents a year-on-year increase of 15%, the research company revealed, and outstripped growth in the more general finance, investment and insurance sector by 11%.
Demographically, Nielsen/NetRatings found that the highest use of internet tax services was by households in the $25,000 to $49,999 and $50,000 to $74,999 income brackets. These groups made up between sixty and sixty-five per cent of the traffic to such sites. In comparison, households with an income over $100,000 were a relatively small presence on the sites.
Patrick Thomas, senior internet analyst at Nielsen/Net Ratings concluded that the bulk of the traffic was comprised of those who were new to filing their own tax returns, and used the internet to gather advice on the process. This accounts for the disparity between income groups, Thomas suggested.
