YouTube Signs Licensing Deal With Warner, Facing Action By Universal?
by Glen Shapiro, LawAndTax-News.com, New York

19 September 2006

Online video-sharing portal, YouTube has hit the headlines several times in the past few weeks, with the sometimes copyright-infringing nature of its content providing cause for concern in the music industry.

Speaking to analysts last week, Universal boss, Doug Morris prompted speculation that the company was planning a lawsuit against YouTube and social networking website MySpace, when he dubbed the websites "copyright infringers" who owe the music industry "tens of millions of dollars".

However, subsequent reports on the matter have quoted Universal representatives as denying that legal action is on the firm's agenda.

Meanwhile, Warner Music appears to be taking a more proactive stance on the issue, and announced on Sunday that it has signed a licensing agreement with YouTube.

In addition to allowing YouTube users to use music from Warner artists in the videos that they upload, the record company will also provide music videos and other copyrighted content for distribution via YouTube.

Under the terms of the agreement, the firms will share the revenue from advertisements which will bookend the music videos.
