Vanuatu Slides Into Constitutional Chaos
According to reports, Vanuatu’s new coalition government led by Serge Vohor is facing a constitutional crisis after just one week in power.
A report from ABC Radio Australia News has indicated that the opposition faction, led by Ham Lini, has lodged a vote of no confidence with the clerk of parliament.
If the motion, which is being considered by the Speaker and acting President Josias Moil, is upheld, Prime Minster Vohor has threatened to declare a state of emergency in the Pacific state.
The coalition government of the French educated Vohor, elected to his second spell as Prime Minster last month having led Vanuatu in the mid 1990s, is made up of several parties, a number of independents and two disaffected senior members of the Vanua'aku Party.
However, with no one party able to hold down enough support in the 52-seat assembly to govern effectively, it is possible that a presidential vote set for Friday may also be jeopardised.
