US Soldiers To Receive Tax Break For Christmas
by Mike Godfrey, Tax-News.com, Washington

18 December 2001

The US Defense Department has revealed that troops fighting in the front line in Afghanistan will receive a federal tax break in appreciation of their services to the country.

The tax break, which is the result of a Presidential Order, will apply to all military personnel serving in Afghanistan and the airspace above it, and will in effect mean a pay rise of several hundred dollars a month for most troops.

According to the Defense Department, the soldiers will receive their paychecks without any federal taxes taken out retroactive to September 19th, which means that eligible US personnel can expect a refund on taxes already paid, and an immediate cessation of future withholding.
