US Seeks More Bilateral Trade Deals
The Office of the US Trade Representative (USTR), Robert Zoellick this week
announced plans to expand trade with Latin America by launching bilateral trade
agreement negotiations with Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia, and Columbia. It also emerged on Tuesday that the USTR plans to initiate free trade talks
with Panama, a move described by Mr Zoellick as a "vote of confidence"
in the jurisdiction. The US Trade Representative stressed that the talks now being held with 13
Latin American countries over bilateral trade are designed to support, rather
than undermine the ongoing negotiations over the planned Free Trade Area of
the Americas (FTAA) agreement. He went on to explain that the bilateral negotiations form part of the US's
two speed strategy, designed to assist countries which have effective provisions
in place with regard to intellectual property protection, investment, and services,
and want to liberalise quickly, to do so. .
