UK Government Announces Gambling Law Review
In
response to the recent exodus
of British bookmakers to offshore centres such as Gibraltar, the
UK Government has announced a comprehensive review of its gambling
laws. The move offshore
by prominent bookmakers such as Ladbrokes and William Hill
to set-up internet gambling operations has prompted concern in
the Government over the future of its gaming duty revenues which
have already fallen by more than 6% over the past two years. In announcing
the review, the UK Home Secretary, Jack Straw said social
attitudes had changed and most of the 30-year-old laws governing
gambling were outdated as they had been overtaken by advances
in technology. The Government
will appoint an independent review body next year, which will
look into establishing a new regulatory structure for UK gambling,
including internet gambling. The review body is expected to report
back within 12 months of its appointment and will be followed
by a public consultation process. .
