05 May 2008

It was announced on Thursday that Deputy Lyndon Trott has been elected as Guernsey's new Chief Minister.

The St Sampson’s deputy won the six-way contest in the States on a fifth ballot, polling 27 votes to Deputy Bernard Flouquet’s 19 votes.

Rival candidates were defeated in previous ballots – in order: David De Lisle, Carla McNulty Bauer, Hunter Adam and Al Brouard.

Deputy Trott, who has been a deputy for eight years, and spent the previous four years as Treasury and Resources Minister, will draw up his Policy Council nominations before Tuesday’s ministerial elections.

He stated that he had "experience, energy and enthusiasm and a capacity for fresh ideas" to bring to the role, and urged deputies to work together.

"Together let’s make this the best States ever," Trott urged.

Deputy Trott said that the States had a duty to the island to focus on planning for a sustainable economy, in order to provide a future for islanders.

Additionally, he has promised to "build and lead an experienced team which fulfils this duty".
