Swiss Schengen Vote Welcomed

In a referendum on Sunday, Swiss voters agreed to join the Schengen and Dublin accords on passport-free European travel and the harmonisation of asylum procedures.

According to the final results, 54.6% of those who voted were in favour of joining Schengen/Dublin, a result which has been welcomed by both the Swiss government and the European Union.

Speaking to reporters following the 'yes' vote, Swiss President, Samuel Schmid announced that it had vindicated the government's stance on the importance of bilateral treaties with Europe.

"The government is convinced that the bilateral way is currently the only option and will allow Switzerland to intensify its cooperation with the EU."

The Swiss populace is set to vote in September on the extension of an agreement on the free movement of labour to the new EU member states, after which the Union will decide whether to ratify a second set of bilateral treaties with the country.
