Swiss Music Industry Says Piracy Costing It Billions Of Francs
According to reports in the national media, illegal downloading of music from
the internet is having a significant impact on music sales in Switzerland, and
the authorities are finding it difficult to combat such activity. Figures released by the Swiss Anti-Piracy Federation (SAFE) revealed a 15%
drop in the sale of music in 2003. However, despite the appointment by SAFE of inspectors to track down the providers
and users of peer-to-peer downloading services, and the tougher stance over
prosecution for such activity recently assumed by the Swiss branch of the International
Federation of the Phonographic Industry, the fight against online music piracy
is not proving easy. According to a Swissinfo report on the subject, the difficulties lie in the
international nature of the activity, and the potential ambiguity of the 'fair
use' clause contained within Swiss law. "In general, Swiss legislation applies only to illegal acts committed
within our national boundaries," Vincent Salvade, legal chief of the Swiss-French
branch of the Swiss Society for the Rights of Authors of Musical Works (SUISA)
explained to the news service. .
