Swiss Government Wants To Boost Tax Take, Cut Spending
by Ulrika Lomas, Tax-News.com, Brussels

03 February 2003

The Swiss government has announced that it wants to cut spending and boost tax revenues in order to avoid facing a large shortfall in its federal budget by 2006.

According to a report from the Swissinfo news service on Friday, the government has estimated that the annual deficit could reach SFr5.5 billion ($4 billion) over the coming four years.

The news service revealed that measures currently under discussion include a reduction in defence spending, moves to trim the state pension scheme, and increases in tax on cigarettes and alcohol. However, these proposals face a long battle through parliament, according to Swissinfo, and are unlikely to be put into action any time soon.
