St Vincent & Grenadines ‘Ready For The CSME’
by Amanda Banks, Tax-News.com, London

02 March 2005

According to a report in the regional media, Caricom official W. Salas Hamilton believes that the population of St Vincent & the Grenadines is familiar with the issues surrounding the Caricom Single Market Economy (CSME), and that the jurisdiction is well prepared for assimilation into the economic union.

“I think St. Vincent is on board; very much on board. I don’t think there are any serious issues as in some other countries regarding whether people can travel or come into St. Vincent, etc,” Mr Hamilton told Caribbean Net News in an interview.

He went on to note that:

“From the groups I met with, they were all wholehearted in saying they don’t think there will be any mass exodus from St. Vincent when you have the CSME final signing and legislation being passed by the end of this year."

“I think St. Vincent is very much on stream in terms of accepting that as we face globalisation with the Free Trade Area of the Americas.”

However, Mr Hamilton did express some concern that many residents were not aware that the Single Market element of the CSME has been largely agreed and is scheduled to be put in place by the end of 2005.
