by Amanda Banks, Tax-News.com, London

29 November 2001

In his capacity as the Minister of Finance, the Vice-President of the Seychelles, James Alix Michel delivered his annual budget address to the National Assembly yesterday.

The budget address marks the start of National Assembly proceedings on the Appropriation Bill 2002, which is reportedly proposing spending of around R1,306,464,000 for the 2002-03 fiscal year.

According to figures published in the Official Gazette, the Ministry of Education and Youth is set to receive R150,537,000 next year, up from the R139,000,000 which it received this fiscal year, and the Ministry of Health is to receive R139,640,000, also an increase on last year's allocation. The Ministries of Tourism and Transport, Internal Affairs, and Defense also reportedly received slighly more generous handouts for fiscal 2002-03.

The National Assembly has now adjourned to consider the Finance Minister's budget address, and will reconvene on Friday to debate the proposals put forth on Wednesday.
