The Seychelles Chamber of Commerce and Industry expressed optimism for the private sector following a meeting with President James Alix Michel to discuss matters relating to business, investment, industry and the economy in general.

"We are pleased with this new opportunity. We have been frank and sincere in our discussions, and happy that President Michel has also been very open in his interactions," Mr Albert Payet, chairman of SCCI told reporters after last Thursday’s meeting.

The main focus of the discussions centred on issues such as trade liberalisation, good governance, transparency and the roles of the Seychelles Marketing Board and Tender Board. The Macro Economic Reform Programme was also discussed.

Payet indicated that he was satisfied at the government’s progress at implementing needed economic reforms, although he pointed out that certain issues could be resolved in a more timely fashion. However, he also accepted that more time was needed to remedy other issues.

Meanwhile, Secretary of State Mr Butler-Payette, revealed that the President was happy with the outcome of the discussions, adding that the talks represented a new phase in public/private relations in the Seychelles.

Mr Michel assumed the presidency earlier in the month after the former leader, France Albert Renee, stepped down following 27 years at the helm.
