SIPTU Presses Irish Government To Fast Track Tax Reforms For Mining Sector
by Amanda Banks, Tax-News.com, London

05 November 2001

Ireland's largest trade union, SIPTU, is pressing the government to speed up changes to the tax laws for mining companies in particular in light of the news that 700 people have lost their jobs at the Co Meath zinc Tara Mines.

SIPTU branch secretary, Christy McQuillan, told reporters that mining groups do not have the same advantageous tax breaks as the manufacturing industry and this will be a 'priority' issue during talks with the government this week. 'The mining industry is treated differently in terms of a revenue and capital tax point of view', McQuillan said.

Plans to reform the tax regime which charges the mining sector a 25 per cent corporate tax rate as opposed to 12.5 per cent enjoyed by the majority of Ireland's industries have been discussed for several years added McQuillan - 'That inequality should be removed and the mining industry given the same taxation terms as manufacturers. We are meeting with Environment Minister Noel Dempsey and that matter will be on the agenda. This has to get priority now, and the fact that we are heading into a budget in a matter of weeks… that should preoccupy the finance minister.'
