SCO Profits Hit By Legal Fees
by Glen Shapiro, LawAndTax-News.com, New York

30 December 2003

SCO Group has reported a fourth quarter loss, it emerged this week, largely due to the legal costs of its fight with the Linux community over the alleged use of its Unix intellectual property in the open source operating system.

In a statement, the firm announced that it had made a net fourth quarter loss of $1.6 million, although this is better than in the same period in 2002, when it reported a loss of $2.7 million.

Had the $9 million payout to lawyers defending the firm's intellectual property rights in various legal battles not been made, however, SCO revealed that it would have reported earnings of $7.4 million.

Despite this, SCO's chief executive, Darl McBride suggested that: "Fiscal 2003 was a pivotal and successful year for SCO."
