A report commissioned by the
Ministry of Industries and International Business (MIIB) in the Seychelles has
revealed that the jurisdiction has enormous potential for e-commerce development,
particularly in the provision of offshore financial services.
The study - conducted by
independent finance expert Dr Venu Kumar - came to the conclusion that the financial
services, tourism, and fisheries sectors could bring most potential benefit
to the country by engaging fully in e-commerce practices. It recommended that
the Government and the private sector work together to strengthen the existing
e-commerce framework, which, Dr Kumar suggested, is not being used to its full
potential by many businesses and service providers in the Seychelles.
Speaking on behalf of the
MIIB, Research Officer Garry Domingue said that he was confident that the jurisdiction
could develop its e-commerce potential, explaining that the financial and other
business sectors are already well-versed in the theory and advantages of electronic
operations. According to the MIIB, the findings of the report will now be submitted
to the Commonwealth Secretariat, which will liaise with the Ministry in order
to find the most effective way of implementing its recommendations.
The release of the report
follows an earlier meeting between the MIIB, the Seychelles International Business
Authority (SIBA), and the Seychelles Association of Offshore Practitioners of
Registered Agents (SAOPRA), which was held to find ways in which to increase
the international competitiveness of the jurisdiction's offshore finance sector.
Diversification into greater electronic service provision was also recommended
at that meeting.
