Prince Albert Assumes Throne In Monaco
by Ulrika Lomas, for LawAndTax-News.com, Brussels

14 July 2005

It emerged on Tuesday that Prince Albert II has assumed the throne in the Principality of Monaco, following the death in April of his father, Prince Ranier.

Although Prince Albert automatically became the country's leader following his father's death, he did not officially assume the role until Tuesday. Another ceremony completing his accession to the throne is set to take place on November 19.

Speaking following his assumption of the throne, Prince Albert stressed his commitment to continuing the campaign, launched by his father, to crack down on money laundering and improve the Principality's reputation in that area.

"We must absolutely free ourselves of this equation that Monaco equals laundering," he told France's TF1, adding that although tougher legislation is now in place, in the past Monaco has perhaps "lacked vigilance".

At present, the country remains on the OECD's list of allegedly "uncooperative tax havens", a state of affairs which its new ruler is no doubt keen to address.
